Hi all, i was in my [acronym:21f5c2a8ca="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:21f5c2a8ca] today and saw the Biorb and the media you can buy for it

and it said "Extra ceramic media can be added to your Reef One aquarium. This will increase the area available for biological filtration and makes it easier to anchor plants into position.

The ceramic media should not need to be replaced, but if you wish to change the media you should do so gradually, in stages, and not all at once. Changing the media gradually allows the existing filter bacteria to move across and colonise the new media from the old".

I thought this stuff looks very like crushed up live rock, and was wondering if any of you guys have seen it and what you thought of it? Also would it be good to put in the sump, as would it act like live rock in the end?

Andrew

It would basically be the same as rubble rock in principal. It would be more for aerobic nitrification of [acronym:bb50245ebb="Ammonia"]NH3[/acronym:bb50245ebb] and [acronym:bb50245ebb="Nitrite"]NO2[/acronym:bb50245ebb] than any help with [acronym:bb50245ebb="Nitrate"]NO3[/acronym:bb50245ebb] as it is too small and will oxygenate easily. All items in the tank become "live" to a certain extent as they are colonized by bacteria and such. As far as fauna is concerned, I think the best you will acheive with this is a good "safe zone" for [acronym:bb50245ebb="copepods, amphipods, etc"]pods[/acronym:bb50245ebb] and possibley worms between the rock layers.

They claim it to be inert but since it is man made, I would send an e-mail to the manufacturer to find out about silicate, [acronym:bb50245ebb="Phosphate"]PO4[/acronym:bb50245ebb] leaching or other possible [acronym:bb50245ebb="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:bb50245ebb] no-no's. All references I saw where for [acronym:bb50245ebb="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:bb50245ebb].

Cheers
Steve
