Monthly Photo Contest

Do you have a photo that you prize? Are you a little shutter bug when it comes to your aquarium? If so then this contest is for you.

Every month we will have a contest where you (the members) can submit photos you feel are the "cream of the crop". Submit your photos by personal message to reefrunner69 or fishfreek. For OT entries send to lmw80. The Aquarium Advice staff will review each and every entry and select half a dozen as finalists.

We will then run a 1 week poll where you and your fellow members can vote on which photo you feel is the best of the best. The winner will then get displayed on the front page of the site for one month.

To be considered for the contest please read the rules to this contest

RULES:
  • -All photos must be original photos taken by you or photos of your tank. (please do not submit photos of another persons tank unless you have gotten written permission from them to do so. If you do please include this written permission with your submittal)
-All photos must be submitted in .jpg format and should be limited in size to 800x600 or 60800 depending on layout and a file size no larger than 250KB.
-All submissions should include the common name and scientific name of the subject contained within the frame.
-All submissions should also include helpful information relating to the background of the subject, care requirments, etc.
-Only 1 photo submission per month per member.
-The current photo of the month winner must sit out for a period of one contest.
-No photo manipulations, all editing should effect all pixels equally.

Effective 11/02 the Photo contest has been modified to allow for seperate freshwater and saltwater contests. Please see the below info on how these changes affect the contest.

There are to be three contests each month.

One for saltwater photos, one for freshwater photos and one for OT Photos.

If you have both fresh and saltwater tanks you are permitted to post 1 photo in each contest per month.

The rules for the photos above are the same. The submissions will close 1 week prior to the close of the month for saltwater and the freshwater submissions will close on the last day of the month (effective with the Jan 2003 contest).
A poll will be placed on the main page for a period of 1 week to vote on the photos submitted.

At the conclusion of that poll the winner will be announced and a "thumbnail" will be placed on the main page linking to a separate page including the 800x600 photo that was submitted, detailed info on the photo and on the subject mater contained within the photo per the rules above.

Photo contest winners will recive 100 Kudos points.

Any and ALL photos relating to aquaria are accepted for photo submission. So if you have a saltwater, freshwater, or pond you can be included in the contest.

All submissions should include the following information:
  • -Type of camera (Make, Model, Digital or Film (if film what kind))
    - What shutter, ISO, aperture settings, was macro used

With this information we can help out other aspiring photographers to obtain the results that other members are getting.

There is a very detailed post in either show off/photo or site help/feedback on posting to the gallery. To submit a post via PM you click the PM button under someones post and then there is a button to add an image. The process is the same as adding a photo to yoru post. There is info on how to include a photo in your post in the site help/feedback forum.

In Response to Clowninaround. I too have a Kodak program and I have to resize almost all photos before I can upload to AA.
Right click on the photo you want to upload and click on properties to find out if the file is too big. 250k or smaller. 150k if your trying to add to a post. Then if it is too big, edit the photo, save it as "title" at 50 or 75% depending on the original file size. Then you should be able to upload you pics.
Good luck,
Jason

I submitted one of my photos to you for Feb photo contest. I see it listed in the photo gallery with keywords Submissions [acronym:29aee41702="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:29aee41702] E. What does [acronym:29aee41702="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:29aee41702] and E stand for?

Also, how will I know if my photo made it to the voting poll?

Thanks

Hmmm, You should not be able to see the photo at all, need to check the permissions. [acronym:53d30423c1="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:53d30423c1] + freshwater (we have 3 contests per month, we have to differentiate between them. E=the 5th submission this month, a, b, c, d, e etc...

There hasn't been a submission yet that hasn't made it to the contest, but if we were to receive enough submissions that we had to cull, you would know when the poll was posted and your photo wasn't in it. We would also PM you to let you know that your photo was not selected for the poll, but as I mentioned, there hasn't been one in the last 2 and a half years that has been turned down.

The photo of the boxer crab I sent have those keywords listed when I saw the photo in the gallery. I looked through all the [acronym:ec73fde248="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:ec73fde248] invert pages of photos and it wasn't in there. It's a [acronym:ec73fde248="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:ec73fde248] animal. Why would it be under [acronym:ec73fde248="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:ec73fde248]?

Because there is a glitch in the software. I uploaded 2 or 3 photos to the photo submissions catagory at the same time, the last photo I uploaded was the [acronym:8082f4f0c9="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:8082f4f0c9] entry for Feb, designated submission E, the information posted in the text areas get's over wrote by what was entered in the last photo uploaded. I caught everything but the title, since I did not specify key words, it went by the title. It has been corrected, it was very wrong, cause your photo was not submitted in time for the Feb contest, the Feb contest was already running when I received your photo, yours is in there for the March contest.

[acronym:eb0796cd7c="For what its worth"]FWIW[/acronym:eb0796cd7c], you should not be able to find/view the photo anymore, when the software was upgraded it changed the permissions on certain usergroups and allowed them access to the submissions category, that has also been fixed.
