Prefilters on Maxi-Jet Powerhead questions
I have a couple of JBJ 235 [acronym:9b2001a94c="Gallons per hour"]GPH[/acronym:9b2001a94c] Powerheads in my 40 Gallon Breeder. I am getting nervous now that I have creatures, and see them cleaning the intakes....I am a little nervous that something could happen.
I am thinking about replacing them with a Maxi-Jet 600 and 900, and getting the Pre-Filters that are a option. I had a few questions: 1. Do adding pre-filters decrease the [acronym:9b2001a94c="Gallons per hour"]GPH[/acronym:9b2001a94c] that these pump give? 2. Do the pre-filters stick on the outside or on the inside of the Maxi-Jet intake 3. Are they hideous to look at? I am trying to keep a 15 times turnover in the tank, and with the maxi 600 160 GHP, the 900 230 GHP, and the Rio 600 on my CPR BakPak giving me 200 GHP I am there. I want to add adequate flow without making a cyclone in the tank. My 2 X JBJ 235 have a small outlet hole, and creates perhaps too much flow in a narrow area. I would be open to any other powerhead suggestions in an attempt to keep good flow...without jet propelling the occupants against the side of the aquarium Thanks [acronym:9b2001a94c="Wild Caught"]WC[/acronym:9b2001a94c]

Actually, Maxi-jets come with a "strainer" type cover for the intake. You can also buy a sponge looking thing to slip over this. The strainer does not look bad and does a good job of keeping things out. I have three maxi-jet 1200s in my reef and have never had a problem with things getting stuck in the PHs.

I just use the strainers. Even when my snails crawl over them, they can escape the suction.
But you would need to clean the strainers every week...they'll get lots of gunk stuck in the grates.
