Question on filtration
I have a 75 [acronym:168839a4a3="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:168839a4a3]. salt aquarium... I would like to know, as long as it fits, if I could put my protein skimmer (with pump) in my sump area along with my return pump. Would this be ok? Anything I need to know? I know this will generate more heat but I could just turn my heater down.
Thanks!! |

I would say most likely no. Just because most skimmers out there require an area of the sump where the water will stay constant. If you can top-off your tank at least twice a day... then go ahead. But if your water level fluctuates by even a half inch, your skimmer will constantly have to be adjusted. [acronym:4de3b673d2="Hope this helps (or) Happy to help"]HTH[/acronym:4de3b673d2] (probably not the news you wanted).
Just out of curiosity... what skimmer do you have?

So is the best solution just to hang it off the back?

Well... venturi is the kind of skimmer it is. It will add in air to the mix at a different time than say, a needle wheel. Needle wheels, like on my Euro-Reef, will introduce air first, before the pump, and a special needle-wheel will chop up the bubbles so they're TINY. There's spray injection too, that will spray a high level of water through a small hole outlet to create micro bubbles. A venturi will add in after the pump, and is considered to be a pain since the valve has to be constantly adjusted. So, as far as I know, there's no brand "venturi"... just the type.
Also, there are two kinds of skimmers... either in sump or [acronym:db6c452832="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:db6c452832]. Do you have a way to add baffles? What kind of sump do you have? Glass or tupperware.
