really high calcium
I just tested my calcium at 800 [acronym:40cc4addba="Parts per Million"]ppm[/acronym:40cc4addba]!!
I was told that if calcium was too high it would precipitate out, so i wasnt worried about overdoing it. And ive never added calcium before so i thought i had to catch up. Ok, i dont have alot that uses calcium quickly at this point (ie no stony corals), and since ive been adding it, it makes sense that my calcium is high. My [acronym:40cc4addba="Alkinity"]alk[/acronym:40cc4addba] is at 5 meq/L (*2.8= 14 [acronym:40cc4addba="Degrees of carbonate hardness"]dkh[/acronym:40cc4addba] ), but as an experiment i added a little bit of buffer and it instantly turned white with precipitate. Is 800 too high? Are there any ill effects of high [acronym:40cc4addba="Calcium"]Ca[/acronym:40cc4addba]? pH = 8.2 [acronym:40cc4addba="Alkalinity"]Alk[/acronym:40cc4addba] = 5 meq/L = 14dkh [acronym:40cc4addba="Calcium"]Ca[/acronym:40cc4addba] = 800 [acronym:40cc4addba="Parts per Million"]ppm[/acronym:40cc4addba]! Ive heard supplements really make the difference, Ive got [acronym:40cc4addba="milligrams or magnesium, depending on context"]Mg[/acronym:40cc4addba], Reef Advantage [acronym:40cc4addba="Calcium"]Ca[/acronym:40cc4addba] with some [acronym:40cc4addba="milligrams or magnesium, depending on context"]Mg[/acronym:40cc4addba] and strontium, lugol's solution iodine, and kalkwasser. Does that sound like a good lineup ? |

First if your [acronym:b4ed9a4bb6="Calcium"]ca[/acronym:b4ed9a4bb6] were 800 at reef [acronym:b4ed9a4bb6="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:b4ed9a4bb6], you would have a snowstorm. Double check your [acronym:b4ed9a4bb6="Calcium"]ca[/acronym:b4ed9a4bb6] reading, what test kit are you using?

ALWAYS test the water BEFORE adding any supplements! Chances are you were probably within normal calcium and [acronym:99e7a01566="Alkinity"]alk[/acronym:99e7a01566] ranges and adding unbalanced supplements threw things for a loop. With a good salt mix and regular water changes you shouldn't need the [acronym:99e7a01566="milligrams or magnesium, depending on context"]Mg[/acronym:99e7a01566], Sr, or iodine. If your calcium and alkalinity are out of specs you can replace both with kalkwasser or another balanced additive.
