using tapwater
what are your thoughts on using tapwater in a reef system? anybody ever used the tapwater purifier by aquarium phamaceuticals? i'm currently using tapwater in my nano-reef. big mistake?? everything seems to be doing fine. i've had my bubble coral for almost 2 months now and it seems to be doing great. anyways i think i've decided to purify my tapwater. but i'm on an extremely tight budget. is the tapwater purifier okay? or are there any decent R/O D/I units for a good price??

check e-bay for a [acronym:b414d15321="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:b414d15321]/[acronym:b414d15321="Deionization"]di[/acronym:b414d15321] unit. Some people are lucky and have tap water that will work for them. I would say 95% of us need some type of filtration on the water. [acronym:b414d15321="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:b414d15321]/[acronym:b414d15321="Deionization"]di[/acronym:b414d15321] is the way to go. I used [acronym:b414d15321="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:b414d15321]/[acronym:b414d15321="Deionization"]di[/acronym:b414d15321] then switched to kold steril (another filter system) and after about 7 months I noticed my corals were not growing much and I got cyno real bad. I switched back to [acronym:b414d15321="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:b414d15321]/[acronym:b414d15321="Deionization"]di[/acronym:b414d15321] and after a few water changes my corals were popping and things were bigger then ever. Water quality is the key to having a great reef ....

Basically an [acronym:4444dcba7c="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:4444dcba7c]/[acronym:4444dcba7c="Deionization"]di[/acronym:4444dcba7c] filter is a sediment filter, carbon block filter(s), TFC membrane (this is the heart of the [acronym:4444dcba7c="Reverse osmosis"]ro[/acronym:4444dcba7c] unit) and a [acronym:4444dcba7c="Deionization"]di[/acronym:4444dcba7c] resin cartridge.
Some units have more carbon filters but the main difference will be the membrane. The better filters use a TFC membrane while the cheaper units use a CTA membrane. |

The tapwater purifier by aquarium pharmaceuticals is cheep for a reason but would still be better than using tap.
Amazon has it on sale for $21.99 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...55222?v=glance Very long review on the pros & cons of this system. http://web.archive.org/web/200012120...ct/default.asp Quote:
I have the same one! (at least I think they are the same store) http://stores.ebay.com/The-Aqua-Safe-Pure-Water-Shop (I got the one for $119.50 with the [acronym:19e9f60186="Total Dissolved Solids"]TDS[/acronym:19e9f60186] & PSI meter and have been very happy with it.) Glad you didn’t skimp and go with the cheap AP unit |
