you sho;uld be feeding as little as possible. during a cycle i usually feed only 3 or 4 flakes once a day.

when I got my 10 [acronym:4b35e0046f="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:4b35e0046f] and 5 zebra danios to cycle the tank, I fed them enough so that they'd eat everything on the top of the water, with minimal extra not being eaten. Feeding only a few flakes doesn't seem right because then the fish will be stressed from not eating enough. Honestly, mine were just fine and at that point of getting my tank, I didn't change my water as much then as I do now. Even if it was just over 6 months ago, somehow I've become more responsible... I think it was from joining this site and learning a lot. Anyway, everyone was fine and healthy, they always played in the current, never had a problem.

Side note: Fishless cycling is a much more humane way to cycle a tank and information on it can be found: HERE

Feed just enough that the fish eat it all in less than 20 seconds. If the food doesnt float well then make it 10 seconds. After it is gone repeat 3 or 4 times or till they dont eat it in the time limit or any food hits the bottom. Feed like this twice a day.
It will be a tiny amount with just the 4 danios.

This works well for me.
