Preparing to get some otocinclus

My tank has some brown diatom algae in it. I'm going to let it grow for a while so when I get my 2 otos, they'll have plenty to munch on. If I leave the brown algae undisturbed for too long, will it rot like food and then become indigestible?

Your food is severed from the creature it came from, milk from a cow, orange from a tree. It is no longer alive. Your algae is alive. It's kind of like a cow munching some grass.
