Hi all, my festae are now 12 months old, and I was expecting that they should have more color than what they do. Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible that I have fish that are duds (so to speak)

What size tank are they in and just the two? I'm surprised they haven't killed each other

They do seem off and maybe it's the picture but the males body shape looks very deformed. Genetics are certainly the most important part of quality looking fish, followed by water quality, and lastly food. The fish in question do seem to be very low grade at best from those pictures. Like anything when the demand for something increases people find a way to supply that and the result is low grade fish from constant inbreeding, which results in weak immune system, deformities, and dull coloration.

Here is my female, their colors normally start to pop after they pair and spawn the first time.
