Thought there were several different different strains of rainbow fish that came under the name of Australian rainbow or is there an actual strain called Australian rainbow??

They are indeed rainbow fish but I firmly disagree that they are Australians. The shape of the body and the mouth area is vastly different.

All of that being said, I hate to say, outside of knowing they are not typical Australians I so not know what they are.

Good deal. Not that wiki is the end all be all but the genus is correct and leads back to the earlier link.
