red devil!!!

so i went with my sister to pick up a 65 gallon tank and stand from someone on craigslist and they had a 8-9 inch 5 year old red devil. the tank was in very poor condition and this guy said red devils are so "hardy" that it had been a year since he did a water change. the tank was disgusting and he had been feeding the cichlid koi pellets because they are cheaper than cichlid food. my sister doesnt want this fish and neither does the lfs. my question to you is will it be okay for a while by itself in my 55? i know they need a 75 g tank and will upgrade when i can but i love this fish already its a beauty. it has orange spots around its eyes and its so cool! the tank it was in was 65 same footprint as 55 will it be okay for a while in the 55? and also can you tell the sex? i think its a male because of the hump starting but not sure

He would be ok in a 75 but he'd be happier in the 125. For tank mates, you could add gold nugget or bristle nose pleco

That's a **** Shame....what did he do the fish like that? I wonder if all the white on him is from the polluted water eating away at his color...he might start getting more orange after being in some clean water for a while..

thats what I'm thinking and i actually got him cichlid pellets too instead of the koi food he was feeding him so hopefully that will help too. he loves attention I've already sat in front of the tank for hours each day with him and he's loving it i cant wait to get him a bigger tank. anyone have some good ideas for a large diy tank? I'm scanning craigslist every day for a big tank thats not too expensive but most people in my area with 100+ gallon tanks are asking like 1000 bucks so I'm going to keep searching.

Wait, hold up.... The guy didn't do a WC in over a year??

I don't care how "hardy" a fish is, that's just cruel!

i know i wanted to just deck him in the face lol. its such a pretty fish with a great personality he deserves way better. i have already been doing daily 20 gallon water changes because he had a weird white spot on his head, but it has cleared up already.

anyone know what this could have been? its completely gone now i dont know if it was from stress or poor water conditions or what

I guess its just some kind on sun rash from the polluted water.......he's probably going to start looking brighter with clean water some extra water conditioner with the aloe for his skin

Old thread, i know XD but the white on him isnt "the water eating away" its a red devil. Well, most likely a midevil. (Red devil x midas cross) they are naturally white/orange. But can be any mix of darker red, light red, orange, white. This was my red devil when i had it. One of my favorite fish.
