I have a 20 and a 5 gallon with both fake plants but I'm thinking in my 55 I might have live plants? not sure about stocking or how to take care of plants yet.

Since you are just starting with live plants, research anubias, java fern, and java moss. They are all low light plants, that don't take any special equipment, and are hard to kill. You will need some rocks or driftwood to attach the roots to.

Do you know of any low work plants that can have high lighting for about 8 hours a day or less?

All the plants i listed can tolorate bright light as well as low. You might also research sword plants. They are also very easy, the next step up.
