When it comes to PH, stability is more inportant than a particular level. Not to say that the level isnt important, but for most fish, they can tolerate slightly elevated or lower levels as long as they dont experience big swings.
I completely agree. I've heard of reef tanks being very successful for years with a ph of 7.8 or even less. If you can keep it stable and at 8-8.4 that would be "best", but lower or higher is fine as long as its stable and not too low or too high.
