Kurt, I feel much better after reading your post! I wondered how important the whole thing really was. I'm not going to stress over it anymore: I'm going to go with 2 or 3 inches because I think that looks good and it will be enough to house some critters

If anything, i would say go with 3"s. It would be safer and more comfortable for the critters than 2 inches, and may still be behind the boundary of all that anaerobic and aerobic bacteria stuff.

Ok guys I am going with 2 1/2 though 3 in the front and then up to four in the back. in the front I mean 2 1/2 to 3 in waves in the front and then slop it up in the back so I will have all diffent depths all over! Thankx guy! O how does my sand bed sound?
