Ready to take the plunge so I've done a lot of research, but still confused about this:

What kind of filtration do I need with a FOWLR tank?

Assuming I will use a skimmer, what else do I need?

I'm starting small with a 55 gallon tank. I don't intend on moving up to a reef tank with this setup. When the reef tank bug hits me (and from what I've read it will  I will start with a second much larger tank when I have gained more experience.

Welcome to AquariumAdvice.com gear-head!

by deffinition, a FOWLR has all the filtration it needs if you have a DSB. The sand and LR will filter your water naturally and the skimmer will help with your disolved organics and there's really not much to worry about after that.

You feel pretty confident with your plan of attack?

just cause this is your first post, I'm gonna make a few other suggestions:
Cycle Without Fish
Quarantines
Recomended Books

Welcome !
I use a Emporer 300 with just carbon in the plastic baskets to filter out the fine "stuff"

I have 90 pounds of LR and 55 lbs of LS...
And a Aqua C Remora Skimmer.

I have mostly FOWLR and a FEW polops...
