Crushed coral vs sand

New to saltwater, I have a 72 gal. with wet/dry sump, 50 lbs live rock 52 lbs more comming today, tank is cycled running for about 10 weeks 8 fish and 4 light T5 w/moon lights and I've been using crushed coral a/c advice from LFS, At some point I may do coral is there any reason I can't keep the crushed coral or should i switch over to sand? And can anyone tell me a good lighting schedule and should I have the daylights and the actinics on at the same time?

I would get rid of the crushed coral if it was my tank. I had a 35 gal and pulled the CC out after 2 weeks. My LFS still suggests CC and has it in all his tanks but from my research a sand bed is a better deal. I cant help in the CC and coral question as Ive always be FOWLR. Most of what Ive read says an 8hr light schedule is good. I think you could run them more in a FOWLR so long as you arent getting huge amounts of algae growing.. I think most people do run both the daylighting and actinics at the same times. Some very involved reef tanks use timers and bring the daylights on then switch on actinics later on, Im not sure why as I dont have a reef..

Shane.

CC is a future nightmare. No way that I'd ever run it again.

Thanks for the info i knew not to listen to the LFS but what going to do, I guess it's best to take all of it out or can i leave what's under the live rock? And what's a good sand to use being tank has already cycled.

I do know some fw tanks just use pool filter sand because it is cheap and unadulterated.

Ok thanks for all the help. but two more question, how to change out the cc for sand with fish and LR in the tank? and how much sand for a 72 gal bowfront 48"x12"?
