Curing Live Rock

Hello everyone.
I am wanting to re-introduce rock into my tank. I had it in my tank at one time, and mistakingly thought it was causing my algae and Nitrate problems, So I removed it only to find my problems increased till I became one with water changes and proper cycling. Anyway, I now want to re-introduce it back into my tank. It has been dry for several months, so I am planning on using a large plastic tub to put it in with fresh SW, a circulating pump and a heater. Do i need to do anything else? Do I need to somehow reintroduce life forms? any advice or suggestions would be great!!!

as you know... it's not alive anymore. So, I would guess it will be more like Base rock now. Maybe you should clean it up real good before putting it back in. Do you have any other LR in the tank?

Yes I have about twenty pounds in the tank right now, so if cleaning and putting back in, it might re-energize, so to speak?

That's what I've read.. It will turn "live" again meaning the good bacteria and Coraline will move in quickly.

But not "live" as in full of Hitchhikers. I think that will take some time

Hey ffmd212, you might want to cure that rock again separately? It's not base rock though, it's just like another live rock that sold dry, it needs to be cycled again, so maybe if you could get a bucket of water in the plastic trash can bins, a heater, and powerhead, you can cured it separately first and when it's cycled, you can put them back into the tank.

As for the cleaning, I think you don't need to that, unless it's really dirty, cause you don't want to get rid of good bacteria and plus it's been dry for months, so I think just drop it in the bucket of plastic bins should be okay...

Since its been dry, a brush and clean water is all thats needed. It wont cure on its own since its basically base rock, all the bacteria is dead. I would give it a good scrubbing and plop it into the tank with the live rock. Bacteria will grow on and in the rock making it "live"

Sounds like a good plan to me. We have a good article about it in our SW article section.

Thanks for pointing out the article Melosu. It was very helpful. I believe that since my rock has been dry in a sealed container for over six months that my best bet will be a good cleaning and putting back into the tank. I am sure with time the LR I have will populate the newer addition.
Thanks for all of the replies. I will let you know how it goes!!
