If you are going to get sand, I highly recommend reef flakes from tropic eden... The stuff is the highest quality sand I've seen and provides a great cosmetic appeal...

Btw it's 40$ for a 30lb bag so it's a bit pricey compared to others...

Looks like sand to me.
you can add sand later if you like. It will have to be thoroughly rinsed dry sand IME. No problems with that except some cloudy water for a few days.
