I am new to the fowlr set up. I am building a 65 gallon tank with live rock. I have read that a protein skimmer is the most important. What about a filter???? what is the best??? I have read that most filters will take the good bacteria out. Is that true??

The live rock is your main biological filtration and the skimmer removes organics to reduce the waste introduced into the nitrification process (ending in nitrates). A HOB or canister filter is mainly to "polish" the water as mechanical filtration or some people add rock rubble to increase you biological filtration. If you do choose to use a mechanical filtration it will need to be cleaned every week or 2 or else you will see an increase in nitrates.
