Filtration?

Will a wet/dry sump is good enough for a FOWLR? I just bought a Aquaeon model 1 for my 55gal.. Or should I just remove the bio balls and make a refugium?

Plus If I do decide to go with a refugium can I put the skimmer in the same chamber?

From all I have read, the skimmer would chew up your pods in the refugium which is the whole purpose to having one. I think skimmer is supposed to go before the refugium
