Filtration for 55GAL FOWLR

One option would be a HOB filter. I'd say an AquaClear 110 would be a great choice. You could also do a DIY sump. The plumbing, glass sump, some acrylic sheets, and silicon would prob. cost the same or a little more than the filter, but would def. be the better option IMO. Depends on the work you want to do.
 
DIY sump is like a wet/dry? I wouldn't have the first clue on how that works or how to build....us the aquaclear silent? No recommendations for canister filtration?
 
Wet/dry filtration is just a factory for nitrates. Do you want a reef or FOWLR? Just google or youtube DIY sump and you'll get a bunch of matches. You don't even need baffles. You could just have a tank underneath and put a refugium in a plastic bin to keep it contained and have a return pump. A skimmer would be great if you had the money. Maybe you could find good deals on craigslist. Aquaclear filters are silent. Canister filtration would work, but they can be nitrate factories also if not cleaned frequently. Fluval is a good brand.
