Whatever creatures you put in this tank must have food to sustain them. Carnivores like nassarius snails will need meaty foods to survive. Other algae eating snails will need algae. Crabs also will need food. Why are people suggesting a cleanup crew for a single fish? What are they going to clean up?

That was my point a while ago. Putting a CUC in a new tank seems pointless unless the idea is to just have a tank that showcases those and you plan to feed them. Not many fish are going to thrive in a 5g tank, so options are extremely limited.
 
I would suggest a refractometer for measuring salinity, in that small a tank you'll be needing to keep an eye on your salinity often and hydrometers aren't as accurate...
