I have this hair algae on one piece of live rock in my tank. I have taken a water sample to the lfs for testing. They said everything is fine and that i should remove the rock and place it in near boiling water and then scrub it with a tooth brush to get everything off. Has anyone heard of this?

This would work if you want dead rock :) . If the rock is removable, next time you do a water change fill your bucket with tank water, place the rock in the bucket and remove the hair algae with a toothbrush dedicated to your tank. Otherwise Astraea snails do a good job on hair algae, but they sometimes need to be placed right on it.
