How do I start to cycle my tank?

I have a 29 gallon aquarium with 1 inch deep sand bed and 24 lbs of holy rock in it. I dont know how to start cycling it.

Buy a shrimp from the seafood dept. and float it in your tank and let it decay. That will cause your tank to cycle and you wont have a damsel to deal with later. Lol

Holey rock won't hold any bacteria. I would suggest getting a reef grade rock instead.

That is highly debatable. You can use it as long as you have some reef grade rock with it as mentioned above. It doesn't hold bacteria so you will need something that does. I know my LFS uses some in their tanks as a Ph buffer. Whether it actually works or not I'm not sure.
