My tank is only 5 days old. I went to buy LR yesterday and the person at LFS told me that I need to use a 50/50 light while I cycle for at lease 8 hours daily. What do you guys think?

I think they don't know what they are talking about. If you have any coral or something on the LR, you might want to keep some lights on for a couple hours, but otherwise keep em off. While you cycle there are a lot of excess nutrients floating around and with lights you are bound to get a huge algae explosion. Not a good way to start off your tank :p

No lighting is needed for your cycle. It will help to keep down the nuisance algea if you go without a light. You can run a light if you want but it`s not needed.
