Live Rock

I live in Hawaii and have just started my saltwater tank about a month ago. I currently have 5 damsels and 2 clown fish in my tank. Right now my nitrite is at 25ppm, so I know my nitrogen cycle has started. I am thinking of getting some live rock from one of the beaches and placing it directly into my tank. Is this safe? I hear alot about curing the rock before putting it into your tank. Do I need to do cure it if I plan on putting it in my tank directly from the beach?

dakotahoku, check with your local laws please before collecting the rock as you described. If I recall correctly we have a few other members from HI and i know one of them had told me in the past that its very much illegal to collect rock and sand from the ocean, where as collecting fish like the yellow tang is rather common place.

Thanks to all for the quick reply's, as far as the laws on collecting live rock/sand, I think you are allowed to collect live rock/coral as long as you don't put the hammer to chisel if you know what I mean, and for live sand I think you are allowed (1) 5 gallon buck per person per day for home use. Will the live rock and or sand help speed up the nitrification process of my tank.

yes the live rock and sand will help the cycle process. Keping it in sea water or at the very least keeping it damp with sea water during transport will help a great deal
