I was wondering what type of pump i would need for my sump? I am going to put a ball valve in just in case

what size is your overflow? what is it rated for? is this a drilled tank or a HOB?

It is a HOB but I don't have the overflow yet.

You need to match the pump to the overflow. First get the overflow, then get a pump that matches or is slightly under (after head loss).

Depending on the size of your tank I would recommend getting a pump that has a larger flow then your overflow thus allowing for the decrease in flow due to head pressure. For my 60 gal tank I have an overflow that is rated at 350gph then a return pump that is rated at 650gph. The return pump has to fight about 5feet of head. All in all I would get a pump that is stronger then the overflow
