DOn't listen to the guys at the pet store, they are just trying to make a sell.

You don't need all that stuff to start with. You can wait a little while to buy your protien skimmer, and it doesn't need to be a 450 dollar one. You find cheaper ones on EBAY or other places on the internet. You don't need 75 pounds of Live rock to start with either. You can start with 10-20 pounds and just slowly add another piece every month or so when you get the money.

Don't use crusked coral either, use Livesand.

If you are an aquarist on a budget , like most of us, you don't have to start out with the works. Start with the basics ( good filtration) and build from there.

Thanks for the input.

I already grabbed a whole pile of rock (55lbs of fiji, 35lbs of spiderwick) and live sand (80lbs) and all new filter media for my Eheim 2217 and Rena XP2 filters (good for 100 gal and 75 gal respectively) so now I'm just doing the waiting game.

The water quality is looking good so far, nitrate ideal to ok (10ppm)
nitrite safe (almost 0)
ph acceptable (7.8 )
ammonia low
but alkalinity is off the scale... which confuses me since the pH is low for a saltwater tank (should be 8.4 right?)

Dont worry about alk and PH during the cycle. They will bounce all around during the cycle. The only thing you need to worry about now is Ammonia, Nitrites and nitrates. After the first two are at 0 and you do a 33% PWC then you can worry about the other parameters.

Thanks for the advice.

While observing my microecology tonight I noticed what appears to be tiny jellyfish - very odd! Hydroid medusa perhaps? Where did they come from since I haven't done anything to the tank in over a week? They move around like jellyfish (collapsing their body to push forward) and are pretty transparent except for a tiny ball at their top and their tiny tentacles. I also noticed some worm-like white things that swim through the water, in addition to several coral-like things growing on the rocks.

Any idea what they are?

You might wanna consider placing pumps on both side walls and letting the currents crash at the middle front glass. I don't think one pump will do that well IMO.

Also consider keeping the rock placement away from the side walls enuf so you can clean them. They'll get ugly soon.

So I added some shrimp and the water is really cloudy now and ammonia went from 0.1 to 4.0 in 1 day - yikes! I know that's what's supposed to happen.

Any idea about those jellyfish? I think that the ammonia spike killed them all off though
