Hey everyone newbie here. Just got a 50 gallon and attempting to get it going. Looking for some advice. Set it up with about a 1 inch of crushed coral on the bottom. Got a submurseable heater set at 80. A non canister filter. Just put in 50 gallons worth of sea salt. Right now im just letting it sit and keeping and eye on the salinity, ph, nitrates..ect ect. I cant wait to get it going.

Welcome to AA! :)

You may want to rethink the CC as substrate. It usually ends up becoming a nitrate problem down the road.

Here are some articles which may be helpful to you.

There are many more, but these are good places to start. The hardest thing about getting a SW tank going is the being patient part. ;)

hey everyone thanks for the response. So you guys are against the crushed coral? Would it be suitable to get it going with the coral and switch to the sand?

Welcome to the site. Take it from a person that switched out CC to sand with a full tank of critters. It's best to do it before you get anything in there.

well that was a quick waste of money on my part lol. How much sand should I get ? =

fish only for now. I tossed in a layer of live sand a few hours ago. Now im just gonna keep an eye on my levels and go from there

Welcome to AA! Hopefully it wasn't the bagged "live" sand as it isn't live after sitting on a shelf for awhile. If it was, oh well, it's the same thing as dry aragonite, just costs more.

actually when i stopped in the fishstore i saw a fish that really caught my eye a picasso trigger. However the lady at the pet store said there quite agressive towards certain fish. Do you guys think it would safe for a community tank of clownfish and damsels to have this guy in there as well? really that one for some reason

Let your tank cycle, then add your fish slowly. Damsels and triggers are okay together. Clowns are Damsels so they should be Okay too. Add the Trigger last.
