pH increase

Got lazy and stopped adding a ph buffer over a week ago. At the time, it was at 8.1. I test daily, and without adding the buffer, it jumped and stabilized to 8.3. This is great, but I can't figure out how or why it happened. Thoughts?

Did you open the windows ? That will help raise PH I have read, it's to do with the build up of gas's in your home. Also what time of day did you test ? If you test later in the day PH will be higher than in the morning. PH will rise as the algae begin to do their Photosynthesis .

Those buffers are iffy. I'd really refrain from using it again and see how your tank does. They can cause your alkalinity to change dramatically. Just keep an eye on it.

Thanks....how do you typically control ph without the use of a buffer?

Proper aeration in your tank is key. Pointing your powerheads toward the surface of the water and keeping your tank open will help.

Also, please keep in mind that a stable pH is more important than a "high" pH. As long as it's stable above 7.8 you should be fine.

My ph on my 125g is generally a solid 7.9. I do not add buffers or anything as I think they can bring more problems than they solve. lol

Like mentioned above, if it's consistent I would just leave it be.
