I'm considering converting my 125 gallon African chiclid tank to a FOWLR, but only if I can do it 'cheap' (relatively speaking). I can get pool filter sand cheaply, under $10 for a 50 pound bag, it's white, looks good in a small chiclid tank I've got, and was wondering if it was acceptable for salt water?

since you've used it for other aquariums if you're comfortable it won't have any chemical contaminants then sand is sand.

However, you may have other "cheap" options that are better. There are a couple brands of argonite based play sand. This is the exact same stuff that Carrib Sea sells for big bucks. Check your local Home Depot's or hardware stores. The grains of sand are small smooth lumps, not sharp edged silica sand.
