Just installed, and successfully operating a sump with a refugium. I'm wondering what I should put in it (substrate, rock etc.). I would also like to grow macro algae. How do I start the growth? Skimming removes phosphorous and nitrogen, should I take out the skimmer if I want to grow macro algae?

You can keep the skimmer going. For the refugium, most people put in rubble rock along with macro algae. Some macro algae require a substrate, others (like chaeto) do not. You will need to buy a small cutting of macro algae to start off. Check your LFS or if you prefer buying online, I have heard great things about reefcleaners.org.

I have LR and chaeto and mangroves i got from reefcleaners. They have a small bagghie full for like $5. :)

I also have a dsb in my refugium area.

deep sand bed. 4" to 8" i believe people use that term for. I have about 4 inches in my refugium and maybe 5 in my main tank
