Shrimps and goby's

Will Cleaner shrimp pair up with a goby or is it a specific shrimp/goby type thing?

Usually it is the pistol shrimp variety.

Yes, you want a Pistol shrimp and a shrimp goby (quite a few to pick form).

hmmm, ooook, drats! lol Next question: Do gobys have to be paired with a shrimp or is that just "one of those things" that just happen so to speak. I need somethingn to sift the sand around 'cuz im tired of sterilizing my hand and arm and sifting it by hand. ugh. I need more occupants for this tank I know but I'm liited in funds. oh well, tax time!!!! and crabs other than hermits and those starfish things are unfortunately not an option for this tank.

Try some nassarius snails, one of my favorites. To answer your question, no gobies do not need to be paired with a shrimp. My pistol moves quite a bit of sand.
What issues are you having with your sand?

diatoms i belive it is. just a scorched look to the sand

If it is diatoms, they will burn themselves out.
