In my 55g saltwater tank is a skimmer really needed?

There is a lot of factors. You already have fish in your aquarium, how is it doing without?

It seems fine right now. What would the skimmer do for my tank

It will give you the filtration without the place for nitrates to fester.

They're helpful yes but some people do without them. Personally i think if you can afford one then get one.

They basically removed disolved waste and you are able to collect this into a cup and clean it out.

So it will collect the waste? Cuz I have some waste on my sand occasionally
