Starfish ?????

So I got a new sand sifting starfish and he just stays in one spot and doesn't do anything. Is this normal. And what do they need to eat. Thanks

They sift through the substrate. They filter out the fauna in the substrate. Most starve to death because the substrate can keep up with enough for the star. It has to be a huge tank to have enough.

Well I'm in the middle of a huge algae break out so its been helping

I've had a sand sifting star for several months. He does his thing sifting through the sand, half the time he's under the sand out of sight, I have a 2 inch deep sandbed. You'll notice they are actually pretty quick little suckers when on the surface. My star was moving around some rock on the glass and fell upside down, pretty cool watching him flip back over
