Major newbie question...

Is this dark coloring just natural, like the tank maturing, or is it something bad?

Looks like diatoms developing. They'll go away once they consume all the silicates in your tank.

Diatoms? Silicates? Sigh. Sometimes it's like you are speaking a different language. This is a hard hobby to teach yourself!
