I was interested in the yellow eyed keyhole tang, but the I read they would pick on cleaner shrimp. If this is true I have looked into yellow tangs. Will they work or should a stick with the bristle tooth.

I have a yellow tang in my 46 gallon. I know I will have to put him in a larger tank or get rid of him eventually as they do require typically a 100G for lots of room to swim however my tang has done very well to date and does not seem stressed at all in the smaller tank.

Okay I will probably go with the yellow tang until he outgrows the tank. Is it true a cleaner shrimp help keep ich under control.
I also would like to know that if I bought the tang from petco, will they take it back when it gets to large thanks.

I've never dealt with petco, I have a big Al's near home who will take back any fish as long as it is healthy and give you a store credit for the fish.

As for the cleaner shrimp I have not personally heard of it helping with ich but doesn't mean it's not true. My yellow tang loves the cleaner shrimp though and I often see the cleaner shrimp hanging off of it. I've read this is pretty common between yellow tangs and cleaner shrimp.

If you don't have one I would definitely recommend getting one if nothing more than entertainment. I have one and its my favorite this far and I want to get another. Lots of personality, the fish love it for its cleaning abilities and he even hops onto my hand every time it's in the tank. A must have in my opinion.

Okay thanks for the information. I do not have my tank setup yet but will soon and I WILL be getting a cleaner shrimp. Thanks for all your help I look forward to talking to you later if I have anymore questions!( I am new to this site and hobby) Good Night!?

I'm still relatively new as well compared to many on this site. The best advice I can give you is just be patient. Don't rush anything. You'll get excited with all the different fish and inverts that you can add but just know its a slow process but worth the wait in the long term success of your tank :) Read lots, ask lots of questions and of course, Enjoy!

Cleaner shrimp do not help with ich, only copper/cupramine and hypo are proven treatments. Most tangs will soon out grow a 55 g tank, but are filled with character. Welcome to the hobby!

don't put a yellow in a 55g. someone saying they will rehome it when its too big isn't an acceptable answer for several reasons. 1) we are not marine biologists that have spent decades studying these fish, so we have absolutely no idea what size is "too big". 2) you form a bond with these fish that only grows and deeps as time passes, sure it might be easy to say now, but when the time comes to actually rehome the fish, you wont want to. you may even make excuses as to why you don't have to. do yourself a favor and stock according to your tank size using a fishes ADULT size. don't want to? then buy a bigger tank:) a yellow tang in a 46 or 48 is not ok and shouldn't be passed off as such. youre talking about an 8" fish that can easily cover a 6-8 ft long tank without even trying.

I would like to defend my previous point slightly. A bit of background, my yellow tang was the First fish that I added to my tank. I was naive at the time in thinking that the young man at the LFS would guide me and I did not do any additional research (something that I do regularly now). I have since become good friends with the owner who is much more knowledgeable and helpful. I do plan on upgrading my 46G to something larger (probably a 120G).
The "advice" I gave was simply that I have a yellow tang in my 46G who is doing great but I did give the warning that they do require a larger tank. I do agree that you get attached to your fish but I think that gives you more reason to want it to stay healthy and strive in a larger tank when the time comes, whether that means re-homing it or upgrading your home aquarium to not see it get stressed. I am so happy I have gotten to experience all the character and personality of my yellow tang and don't regret getting it one bit. Just my opinion and experience though, something that everyone should consider when using a forum like this :)

The thing is 9 out of 10 times life gets in the way and we can't upgrade. If you can awesome! But most of the time something occurs and we can't and then a hard decision must be made. To the op I wouldn't even put any of the bristle tooth tangs from the genus ctenocheatus in a 55. They still get pretty big and a 55 is not bet wide. A dwarf angel would possibly get cleaned by the shrimp.

False lemonpeels are the same coloration jsut lacking the blue ring around the eyes. and id say they are moderate to care for. angels have a very particular dietary need, so long as thats met, they will do quite fine. To Craig, i apologize if i came off a bit harsh, it wasnt my intention to aim that at you. my concern is that with this hobby, especially SW, ive noticed that its fairly easy to have a horrid experience, especially in the first 6 months- year. that being said, i feel as though we should take every single step to set ourselves up for success, and also keep the inhabitants long-term health in mind. and as bribo mentioned, more often than not, our "upgrade" intentions get put off due to unforeseen events.

they will, and in a very well established tank of the prope size, thats not an issue. but in a new tank that doesnt have the proper establishment of microorganisms and algae, we have to do our best to feed correctly.
