Tell me about CowFish/BoxFish....

Hey all,

Can anyone with experience with cowfish/boxfish fill me in?

I went to a LFS the other day and they had the cutest 1/4" cowfish, I wanted to take it home soo bad.

But I looked in their fish book and saw that all the cow/boxfish had a toxic poison that they let out if they are stressed or dieing, so that turned me off, as well as I could not find out which type he was. I did see there was many types most over 1' when they reach full size, but I did see atleast 1 that was only 4" when full grown... The LFS said they didn't know what type it was, just that it was a cowfish.

I should have snapped a picture, with my cell phone but didn't think about it at the time. The picture below is the closest picture I could find to what the one I saw looked like (I know its small, but its the only one I could find...)

He was yellow with black dots, no hornes, and green/blue eyes. I know many marine fish change some quite drastically when they mature, so I am lost as to what kind he is..

Also the book they had did not say how long it took them to get full size. Right now we have a 55g, but in about 3 years we will be building a house with an inwall tank, probably 200+ gallon...

Thanks,

-TheChad

They are cool.. But another critter that should stay in the Ocean IMO. If you have alot of flow in the tank it will be hard for it to swim. i have seen them get blown all around the LFS tanks and I also have seen them stuck in the overflows. Not saying you can't keep them but I bet they will be a challenge.

not hard to keep at all just cant have tons of flow, sometimes you need sponge on your intakes when thier small and you cant have anyone bothering it, if its a very small one you get it wont out grow a 55g for at least 1-2 years depending what else is in the tank, they are very prone to ich and hard to treat so you have to be very careful when adding other fish, small boxfish have a hard time to start eating so if its not eating at the store its a bad sign.
