IMO, the spectrum of lighting would probably not be what you are looking for. Sad to say but there really isn't a cheap alternative when lighting a reef tank.
 
I bet everyone that ever set up a reef thought the same thing, so It's not stupid question timmy.


PS the algea I was referring to isnt the good kind :wink:
 
Plus it's super yellow light with a poor spectrum, and is just as hot as MH bulbs.

If it makes you feel better, they don't work on FW planted tanks either.
