What needs to be done? I assume the bacteria is different? I plan on using one of my fluvals on a 40gal tank I have sitting in my garage, I figure its been a while I should probably set up a QT for my SW tank. LR doesnt need light right? So I could add some to the media trays.

Ive seen this topic arise before, I just had no luck with the search. TIA

Yes the bacteria for FW and SW are different and will not survive the turnover. As far as the LR , the nitrifying bacteria does not need light to grow on the rock.

Ok, so is there any need to wash out the filters? Any negative effects on the tank from fw bacteria?

No negative effects from the bacteria. If your exchanging the media I would suggest rinsing it, or better yet replacing it. Beware if you've ever used copper with the equipment. It can bind to materials and slowly leach back out. That can cause problems with the inverts on LR.

Nope never used copper with them, these are for a QT anyways so no LR or inverts.
