Uv stabilizer

So today I bought a aa 24watt stabilizer from a friend for 20.00 it was nib. I have done a little research on uv stabilizers but have never run one. I have it in the tank up and running now. Are these things beneficial at all if so how long do I need to run if 24/7 or like I have it set up now to come on when my lights come on.

I believe that you don't run a UV 24/7, the bulbs are rated for a short time. I don't run one but alot of people swear by them, and alot of people think it's un necessary. lol I figure it can't hurt so why not?

I know almost nothing about them however something I read that made a lot of sense to me was that they will kill the algae that is supended in the water that moves through them but that does nothing to the algae that is attached to tank walls, rock, etc. As for how long to run them?????
