Vacuming

I try not to disturb the sand bed, I put my hose close to suck up the top layer of crap. Normally I don't get sand in the hose, but I get a tiny bit here and there.
 
Ok thanks for the heads up, doesn't messing with the sand release toxins?
 
Then yes, I would be vacuuming it....OUT. Then replacing it with a finer substrate that needs little/no maintenance.
 
Well the bag I got it in says sand, it is really really fine coral
 
So, if the grains are smaller, it shouldn't need any vacuuming. Just keep adequate flow in the tank to keep poop and uneaten fish food suspended until it can be removed by your filtration and you should be good to go.
