Hello :)
So i keep reading about water changes on posts. I had a sw fowlr several years ago for at least 2 yrs before i did any water changes. All my fish, snails and shrimp did well without them.

Was i just really lucky? How often and why should i do water changes?

Yes, you got very lucky. Usually you want to do weekly water changes of at least 10-15%. If you happen to miss a week here or there, that is fine, just do your best to stay on top of them. You may need to go out of routine every once in a while and do a large water change if a problem such as algae or cyano occurs. Make sure the water you are adding has the same SG and temp as the tank itself. Hope this helps.
