Untreated well water test results (prior to installation of water softener):

Nitrate = 3.7 mg/l
Iron = .002 mg/l
CA CO3 = 174 mg/l
PH = 7.075

Now what? Is RO/DI the way to go? If I buy such a unit, should the softened water be routed through it or the straight well water? Tank is in the design stage, but will be FOWLR.

Jeez, every hour of research I do seems to indicate I have to spend about another $100. Sobering, since last time I had a SW tank, I substituted patience for water testing (didn't even own a test kit) and was quite successful. TIA.

Yes I'd use RO/DI water, not sure I'd soften the water first, but would definitely have some form of iron filter first, iron will tear up an RO membrane quick!!

I would also go with an RO/DI unit. Did you by chance test the TDS of your well water? I'm not sure if the carbon prefilter will remove iron or not. It would be something to check into. I would use straight well water instead of the softened water through the RO unit.
