How regulary should sand be changed in a 55g aquarium?

Sand is not something you change out. Disturbing old sand beds in a tank could be a bad thing for the tank.
Why change it out?

The reason why i asked is that on this forum i saw someone asked about using old sand from another tank and the advice was to change it. So I wondered as years passed if anything would go wrong with my sand.

That is because they were going to have to tear the sand bed up and it would have fouled the tank up. You do not want to change your sand uinless you are changing tanks or moving the one you have and then I suggest you add new sand and seed with a few cups of the old. But if your tank is just sitting there dont change the sand for two reasons. 1) It will cause an ammonia spike and 2) you will disturb the fauna in the sand bed.

That post was probably about moving a tank. In that case, since you almost have to break down the tank and will end up stirring the sand bed anyways.
