if it is a normal HOB the water turn over may be good but it wont provide the current needed. Most canister filters will provide the needed current. A PH would do the same and be easier to control.

I say if you want to use the filter then use it. No matter what anyone says they are beneficial. I have an aquaclear 500 that I change the media twice a month and my nitrates are 0. Live rock is great for bio filtration but has no mechanical or chemical capacities. A lot of people can't afford 2lbs of liverock per gallon. To all you newbies there is absolutely nothing wrong with using hob or canister filters on your sw tanks. With a little maintenance they are an excellent tool for your aquarium.

the filter media colects detritus and that will lead to high nitrates as it breaks down.. You can use it succesfully but need to keep the filter media cleaned to keep the detritus buildup low. I currently use a HOB canister filter but plan on removing it soon(once my new closed loop is setup).
as I stated earlier- you can be successfulwith the filters it just requires extra work

Depending on what kind of fish you add, a skimmer would probably be a good idea too.

If you're not overstocking, I'd skip the skimmer.
