i dont have any moonlights in my tank yet, and every morning when i turn my lights on my yellow tang has big brownish spots on its side that go away seconds after the lights come on.
from what i understand when fish are stressed they get darker.
is it possible my tang is scared of the dark?

All fish have a night-time display where their colors become drab, which matches their darkened surroundings. If the tang becomes startled when you turn the lights on you can open a window shade to allow some ambient light to penetrate and give a gradual adjustment period.

This happens to my yellow tang too. I've had him for a year and a half now. He seems to be doing fine; eating well and actively swimming. So I wouldn't worry too much.
