Falling in love again

I'm starting fresh water aquariums again after 12 years. I've bartered for a 20 gallon setup and am purchasing a 75 gallon. So much has changed. I loved the underwater filters , but now I'm told they are no do good. I'm going with canister filters. All advise is welcome for acidic tank setup. I'll post pictures when I get started.

Undergravel filters work, but many people like live plants in there FW tanks, so it's better to use HOB or Canister filters in planted tanks. Plus some of us use Sand instead of gravel or potting soil and sand.
