Hello

I joined to get advice as I make the leap into the world of sw. I currently have a 36 gallon fw planted tank with mollies and tetras, and they're beautiful, but I'm just not satisfied.

My first project is a 5 gal nano reef. I don't know what species of coral and inverts are hardy enough for a beginner like myself. Any suggestions woudl be welcomed.

Welcome aboard. You will not be able to have much of anything in a tank that small. One fish and maybe a few corals. The problem you`ll have is that size tank will be hard to maintain because the smaller the water volume the less forgiving it will be on water parameter swings and mistakes. Do yourself a favor and start with at least a twenty gallon tank. Even that you`ll need plenty of dilligence. I always suggest a 55 gallon to start with but I know everyone cant afford or have the space. Five gallons just isnt for someone new in SW. Sorry just my opinion.

I have an RO up and running, if I were to keep a supply of water already mixed to the right parameters on hand, and keep a hawk eye on the tank; couldn't I head off any devistating parameter swings with water changes?

I would be perfectly happy with only one or two coral, I don't need this tank to be busy.

All I can say is try and see. Having water ready is not all the answer. There are many processes that are going on anyway and tanks dont stabilize for 6-8 months. Make sure you do plenty of research on this. Alot of people think if I start with a small tank it will be easier. In SW I always suggest starting at least a 55 gallon and then later on as a challange go for the small tank but learn from a larger tank.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome....melosu, I will take your advice for now, I'm going to try to swing at least a 20g setup, tho I have to get my girl to sign off on another tank in the house.
