Hi!

I have been reading these forums for a couple of days and I decided to go out and get a Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish). I should have done some more reading before buying him because I put him in a tank without cycling it first.

I got lucky because I upgraded his tank from a 2 gallon to a 5 gallon after reading 5 gallons was best for a betta (I want the little guy to be happy!). Due to the tank change I reset the bacteria cycle. The day I brought my new tank (Eclipse Hex 5) home I saw the sticky about cycling fish tanks before adding fish. I found that by reading this thread:

Eclipse Hex 5 & Bettas

I bought an API Freshwater Test Kit and I will be doing PWC's if the ammonia level gets too close to 0.5ppm. So far it is only at 0.25ppm. Hopefully Günther will be okay while I cycle his tank.

Here are some pictures (sorry about the quality, I took them with my phone and Günther wouldn't sit still):

Alright, I am off to clean that piece of nylon I have over the filter intake. I just added some new plants and it is covered in plant parts.

yes very pretty betta i would do a PWC anyway, just to keep it as close to 0 as you can. on a tank that small, shouldn't be too tedious

and welcome to AA

Thank you! I am quite fond of him myself.

EDIT:

I had to pull out my live plants. I guess I bought some that were half dead and the ammonia level has gone from 0.25ppm to 1.00ppm in one day. The person helping me said they had a snail infestation in their plant tank (I was told after my plants were bagged). I thought it would be okay to just rinse the plants and pluck off any remaining snails (she pulled off most of them supposedly).

Anyway, I am headed over to the planted tank section to learn a bit more before I try and take on caring for fish and plants. I just did a 50% PWC while gravel vac'ing. I am going to retest and repeat the process if necessary.

EDIT 2:

So, I just found out I might be at war with snails if any eggs are left in my tank. I had no idea there were so many variables to keeping fish. It makes it a lot more fun.
